Our facial expression should mirror our emotional state, but other factors, some beyond our control, also have an impact on our appearance. Heredity, overexposure to the sun, aging, and smoking, can all lead to slackening of the facial muscles and loosening of the facial skin.
Eyelid skin, the thinnest on the face, is likely to be the first part of your face to show these effects. Changes in elasticity of eyelid skin may make the person look older, tired, sad, or even angry. Such changes affect not only how others see us but also how we see ourselves.
Fortunately, a highly skilled plastic surgeon can "remold" the eyelid area, thus making a patient look and feel younger. Dr. Robert Yohai, a board certified Ophthalmologist, is one of only 500 surgeons nationwide with advanced training in ocular plastic surgery. He specializes in rejuvenation of the eyes, the most delicate and expressive part of our faces. Dr. Yohai has been in practice in Sonoma County since 1992, and has performed thousands of these operations, achieving a high degree of patient satisfaction.
Aesthetic eyelid surgery is performed on adults of all ages. Some people have eyelid surgery to correct problems which are a result of aging, while others have inherited traits which cause them to seek treatment as early as their 20s or 30s.
Any one of the following conditions indicate that you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery:
Aesthetic eyelid surgery can usually correct these problems, though other treatments may also need to be considered.
For example, if the upper eyelid condition is accompanied by sagging of the eyebrows, a forehead lift may be recommended in order to achieve the desired results.
Smoothing of crows feet may require chemical peeling or laser resurfacing procedures.
Circles beneath the eyes caused by dark pigmentation may be treated with a bleaching solution, or may be treated surgically with redistribution of the fat under the eyelids or with facial implants.
Dr. Yohai can provide further information if you have an interest in any of these additional procedures.
During the initial consultation, you will be asked to look in the mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved. This will help Dr. Yohai to understand your expectations and determine if they can be realistically achieved.
You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history including previous surgeries, past and present medical conditions and current medications.
It is important for you to provide complete information. High blood pressure, thyroid problems or diabetes are among the medical conditions which may increase the risks associated with eyelid surgery.
Dr. Yohai may want to know if you have allergies, especially if they affect your eyes.
Additionally, he will want to know if you wear glasses or contact lenses and you should bring them with you at the time of the examination.
Dr. Yohai is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist. He will perform a complete evaluation of the form and function of your eyelids as well as a detailed evaluation of the health of your eyes in order to discover any conditions that might increase the risks of eyelid plastic surgery.
New procedures that provide the greatest benefits are upper and lower blepharoplasty, forehead lifting (endoscopic and coronal) and laser resurfacing (periocular, perioral and full face).
The particular technique that Dr. Yohai recommends will depend upon many factors such as the amount of excess fat and skin in the eyelid areas, the position of your eyebrows, the texture of the eyelid and facial skin and the condition of the muscles around your eyelids.
One of the major advances in non-surgical Aesthetic Medicine is the availability of hyaluronic acid facial fillers. These include Restylane, Perlane, and Juviderm. This material is very similar to the material that makes up the majority of our sub-cutaneous tissues. These injections are generally well tolerated with allergy occurring in less than 1% of patients. (A vast improvement over collagen.) These materials can be used to fill wrinkles around the mouth, cheeks and forehead. They are also excellent for filling in hollows in the face such as under the eyes.
Often, we develop wrinkles on the brow, forehead and at the corners of the eyes that are caused by the repeated contraction of facial muscles.
BOTOX is a medication which is injected directly into these offending muscles in a simple, quick and effective procedure.
After a few days, these muscles begin to stop working and the creases flatten out. The effect lasts for 3-6 months and can be repeated as needed.
